FIELD NOTE 04 / MODES
Survival mode.
Hold the line.
Prepare, protect the speakers, move to the next defense point, and survive the three-wave operation.
Quick answer
Section titled “Quick answer”Survival Mode is NMRiH2’s compact, combat-focused alternative to Objective Mode. Responders prepare a defense, protect speaker objectives against escalating infected pressure, regroup around supply drops, and complete three waves before extraction. Hotfix 1.0.4.0 adds a final respawn at the end of Wave 3 and the start of extraction.
Verification scope: Last reviewed August 25, 2026. The free-weekend preview documented a five-minute hold, but the later 1.0 article says the mode kept three waves while adding time. This guide treats the three-wave loop and 1.0.4.0 final respawn as current while leaving exact timers to the live objective UI.
The Survival loop
Section titled “The Survival loop”- Prepare the first position. Official preview notes give the team a short opening window to loot, inspect defenses, and use the initial CRC supply drop.
- Protect the speakers. The broadcast draws infected away from population centers and directly toward the defense point.
- Use the location. Each point of interest can provide traps, boards, cover, sightlines, or other defensive choices specific to the map.
- Regroup after a successful wave. A new supply drop supports the move to the next objective and gives the team a brief reset.
- Complete three waves and extract. The preview flow ends in helicopter extraction after the third successful defense.
The official preview also says that failing two waves opens an early-extraction route. Because exact failure and timing behavior can change, follow the current mission prompts when the live build differs from the preview.
How Survival differs from Objective Mode
Section titled “How Survival differs from Objective Mode”| Survival | Objective |
|---|---|
| Compact maps built around direct defense | Larger maps built around broader mission routes |
| Three points of interest per map | Map-specific objective chains |
| Three-wave structure | Objective sequence varies by map |
| Deliberately faster and more combat-focused | More travel, discovery, and distributed tasks |
Survival still belongs to the wider match and progression experience. It is not the same as Solo practice, and its compact maps should not be confused with the larger Objective locations.
Official 1.0 Survival maps
Section titled “Official 1.0 Survival maps”The Armageddon release announcement lists three dedicated Survival maps:
- Flooded — an industrial complex shaped by water, machinery, and limited dry ground.
- NotLD — the Night of the Living Dead farmstead, expanded across the farmhouse, guest house, and barn.
- Lighthouse — listed as the third dedicated Survival map; the sources used here do not support a detailed walkthrough, so no route is invented.
Each map is described as having three points of interest, with variation intended to keep the defense loop from becoming one repeated room.
Preparation priorities supported by the mode design
Section titled “Preparation priorities supported by the mode design”- Use the opening preparation time instead of triggering pressure while scattered.
- Inspect the defense point for traps, boards, cover, and escape space before the wave develops.
- Treat each supply drop as both resupply and regroup time.
- Preserve enough ammunition and medical capacity to move to later points of interest.
- Read the live objective and extraction prompts; preview-era timings are not treated as permanent.
Common questions
Section titled “Common questions”How many waves are in Survival Mode?
Section titled “How many waves are in Survival Mode?”The official 1.0 Survival article says the mode retained a three-wave structure. Each map also has three points of interest.
Is Survival the same as the original No More Room in Hell mode?
Section titled “Is Survival the same as the original No More Room in Hell mode?”No. The NMRiH2 version is its own current design. Search results can mix both games, so this page uses only NMRiH2 official sources.
What happens if the team fails a defense?
Section titled “What happens if the team fails a defense?”The official preview says two failed waves open early extraction. Use the current mission UI if a later patch changes the threshold or consequence.
Is there a final Survival respawn?
Section titled “Is there a final Survival respawn?”Yes. Hotfix 1.0.4.0 adds a final respawn at the end of Wave 3 and at the start of extraction. The same release notes describe an Objective-mode final respawn as a future change, not part of this released Survival rule.
